The Complete Buyer's Guide to Cast Iron Home Accessories: Everything You Need to Know Before You Buy

Updated April 2026 | By the Rustic State Team

If you've been searching for cast iron wall hooks, farmhouse towel holders, or rustic home decor that actually lasts, you've landed in the right place. At Rustic State, we've been crafting handmade cast iron home accessories from our New Jersey workshop since day one — and every piece is designed to blend timeless industrial character with serious everyday function.

This guide covers everything from our full product lineup to what separates a quality cast iron hook from a cheap imitation. Whether you're outfitting an entryway, renovating a farmhouse bathroom, or just tired of plastic hooks that snap under the weight of a wet coat — read on.

What's in This Guide

Why Cast Iron? The Case for a Lifetime Material

Hooks as they come out of the sand, before any finishing. Illustration, not a photograph of a Rustic State product or workshop.

Walk into any home built before World War II and you'll still find cast iron hardware — hinges, hooks, brackets — doing exactly what they were meant to do. The reason is in the metal itself. The US National Park Service's preservation brief on architectural cast iron records its carbon content as normally 3.0 to 3.7 percent, and says that is what makes cast iron more resistant to corrosion than either wrought iron or steel, and more rigid and more resistant to buckling than other forms of iron. What it is not is tough: the same brief calls cast iron hard and brittle, too hard to be shaped by hammering, rolling or pressing, which is why it is poured into a mould instead. So it will not bow under a heavy winter coat, and it will not rust away the first time moisture touches it — but it is a metal you mount once and leave alone, not one you knock about.

That weight and permanence is exactly why we built Rustic State around cast iron. In a market flooded with mass-produced wall hooks that arrive in a poly bag from overseas, we wanted to make something different: handcrafted cast iron pieces with real design intent, hand-finished surfaces that differ from one piece to the next, and the kind of heft you feel the moment you take one out of the box. We don't print a service life on them. The cast iron building fronts documented in that Park Service brief went up in the nineteenth century and are still standing. If you want to see how a piece gets from molten iron to a finished hook, we walked through it in our account of how cast iron is made.

A material comparison is worth making, but only the half of it that can be sourced. Grey cast iron owes its character to flakes of graphite suspended in the metal. Cambridge University's materials science note on cast iron explains that those flakes damp vibration and make the metal easy to machine, but that they also act as stress concentrators, which leaves it with poor toughness — engineers designing in cast iron are told to keep the applied tensile stress to a quarter of its ultimate strength. That is the whole trade in one sentence: rigidity and corrosion resistance on one side, poor toughness on the other. It is why a cast iron hook does not flex when you load it, and why its shape has to be cast in rather than bent in.

Wall Hooks & Coat Hooks — The Full Lineup

Sirkeci cast iron hooks mounted on an entryway wall holding coats

Sirkeci hooks in an entryway.

Our hook collection is the heart of Rustic State, and the whole range sits together in the cast iron hooks and hangers collection. These are solid cast iron wall hooks designed for real use — hanging coats, bags, hats, dog leashes, towels, tools, and more. Every hook is hand-finished, and most arrive with mounting hardware included; one screw-in model threads directly into wood instead.

Astor Hook — Set of 10

The Astor Hook is our most popular multi-pack hook, perfect for entryways, mudrooms, and garage walls. The clean, geometric profile fits both modern farmhouse and industrial interiors. With 10 hooks per set, it's a cost-effective way to build out an entire wall system. Best for: mudrooms, entryways, coat closets.

Vagon Hook — Set of 10

The Vagon Hook takes its name and its look from vintage wagon hardware. At 10 per set, mounting hardware included, Vagon hooks are the ones to reach for when a whole wall needs covering — garage workshops, barn doors, utility rooms. Best for: garages, workshops, barn-style spaces.

Sabo Hooks — Set of 10

The Sabo Hook features a bold, wide-arm design with a hammered texture that catches light beautifully. It's our top pick for kitchen hanging storage — cast iron and kitchens have always been a natural pairing. Best for: kitchens, pantries, open-shelf cooking spaces.

Sirkeci Cast Iron Hooks

Named after Istanbul's storied railway district, the Sirkeci Hook carries an old-world elegance rarely found in functional hardware. Its ornate base plate and curved arm make it as much a design feature as a practical hook. Best for: bathrooms, bedrooms, entryways where style matters as much as function.

Motris Single Head — Set of 2

The Motris Single Head Hook is our minimalist option — clean lines, solid construction, sold as a pair. Great for small spaces where you want unobtrusive, functional hooks that don't compete with other decor. Best for: bathrooms, bedrooms, small hallways.

Motris Dual Headed Hook

Need to hang two things in one spot? The Motris Dual Head Hook doubles your capacity without taking up extra wall space. One hook for your robe, one for your towel. Simple, brilliant. Best for: bathrooms, behind-door mounting, bedrooms.

Spur Under Cabinet Hooks — Set of 6

The Spur Hook is our only under-cabinet design — it mounts to the underside of a shelf or cabinet and hangs downward, perfect for mugs, utensils, or small tools. A brilliant space-saver for kitchen cabinetry. Best for: kitchens, workshops, craft rooms.

Ray Screw-In Hook — Set of 4

The Ray Hook is our simplest installation — just screw it directly into wood with no mounting plate required. Ideal for coat closets, wood shelving, beams, or anywhere a traditional mounted hook won't work. Best for: closets, wooden beams, shelving units.

Railroad Spike Hooks — Rustic State's Signature Style

The Fred Wall Mount Railroad Spike.

If Rustic State has a signature piece, it's our railroad spike hooks. Few designs capture the American industrial spirit quite like a cast iron hook shaped from a railroad spike — raw, utilitarian, and unmistakably bold.

Railroad spike hooks are hand-finished, so the hammered, distressed texture varies and no two are identical. Cast iron can rust if it is left exposed to moisture for long periods, so in a bathroom or kitchen what matters is keeping it dry.

Fred Wall Mount Railroad Spike

The Fred Railroad Spike is our wall-mount single hook version — clean, bold, and versatile. It works as a coat hook, towel hook, bag hook, or decorative accent. The hammered texture gives it authenticity without looking costume-y. Best for: entryways, bathrooms, kitchens.

Slack Railroad Spike Wall Hook — Set of 2

The Slack comes as a pair — enough to start a horizontal hook rail along a hallway or mudroom wall, or to put two statement hooks in a bathroom or bedroom. Spaced evenly, the two spikes read as one line rather than as two separate objects. Best for: mudrooms, hallways, bathrooms, bedrooms.

Cast Iron Towel Holders & Towel Rings

Towel holders are one of the most-replaced bathroom accessories in any home — and usually for the wrong reason. Cheap chrome rings bend, finishes peel, and plastic brackets snap. Our cast iron towel holders are a permanent upgrade. Once they're on your wall, they're staying there.

Motris Industrial Cast Iron Towel Ring

Our best-selling bathroom accessory. The Motris Towel Ring pairs beautifully with our Motris toilet paper holder and hook for a matching bathroom set. Each piece is hand-finished, so the hammered, distressed texture differs from one ring to the next. Best for: bathrooms, powder rooms.

Motris Towel Holder

The bar-style version of our Motris series — a full-length cast iron towel bar with sturdy end brackets. If you prefer a bar to a ring, this is your piece. Best for: master bathrooms, guest bathrooms.

Billow Hook — Set of 3

The Billow Hook doubles as a towel hook and a general-purpose hook. Its curved arm is generous enough to hold a folded bath towel without it sliding off. Best for: bathrooms, pool areas, outdoor showers.

Fred Rail Road Hook (Towel Version)

The Fred Rail Road Hook adapted for towel use — slightly longer arm for draping towels flat. A signature Rustic State piece that brings railroad-industrial character into your bathroom. Best for: industrial-style bathrooms, farmhouse bathrooms.

Halle Hook

The Halle Hook is our most elegant cast iron towel hook — a swooping, Art Nouveau-inspired form that brings a touch of vintage European character. Perfect if your bathroom leans more toward vintage or shabby chic than industrial. Best for: vintage bathrooms, boutique hotel-style spaces.

Puntal Hook

Simple and robust, the Puntal Hook is a pure utility piece — the cast iron hook that just works. No frills, maximum function. Great for garages, utility rooms, or any space where practicality trumps aesthetics. Best for: utility rooms, garages, laundry rooms.

Cast Iron Toilet Paper Holders

The Motris toilet paper holder.

Yes, even toilet paper holders deserve an upgrade. A cast iron toilet paper holder is one of the cheapest ways to move a bathroom from generic to characterful, and it is a single-fixture swap: the old bracket comes off, the new one goes on, nothing else in the room has to change. Two of ours are wall-mounted; the third stands on the floor and needs no drilling at all.

Motris Toilet Paper Holder

Our flagship toilet paper holder, designed to match the full Motris cast iron bathroom suite. Wall-mounted, solid cast iron, and finished with a naturally distressed texture that varies from piece to piece — with an open arm, so changing a roll is quick. Best for: farmhouse, industrial, and transitional bathrooms.

Puntal Toilet Paper Holder

Wall-mounted and minimal, the Puntal TP Holder offers a lower-profile alternative for smaller bathrooms or powder rooms where space is at a premium. Best for: powder rooms, small bathrooms.

Puntal Free Stand Toilet Paper Holder

No wall drilling required. The Puntal Free Stand is a floor-standing cast iron toilet paper holder that takes two standard rolls and stands beside the toilet on its own weighted base. Ideal for renters or anyone who wants zero commitment installation. Best for: rentals, apartments, anyone avoiding wall installation.

Cast Iron Cigar Ashtrays — A Cut Above

A Corojo cast iron cigar ashtray on a wooden surface

The Corojo cast iron cigar ashtray.

There's a reason cigar enthusiasts take their accessories seriously — and a cheap, flimsy ashtray is an insult to a good smoke. Our cast iron cigar ashtrays are as serious as the hobby itself: heavy, hand-finished with a hammered texture that differs from one piece to the next, and built around a deep basin, with built-in rests that keep a cigar from rolling off. If you are still deciding what to smoke in it, the most popular cigars in the US is a good place to start.

What cast iron brings to an ashtray is mass. It stays where you set it, it does not skate across a patio table, and a breeze does not carry the ash off it. And there is no plating on the surface — nothing to flake, tarnish or pit the way chrome and plated steel eventually do.

Corojo Cast Iron Cigar Ashtray

Corojo is not a region, although the name gets used as if it were one. Cigar Aficionado's glossary entry records it as a Cuban-seed tobacco variety first developed in the 1930s at the El Corojo plantation outside San Juan y Martínez, and the leaf it produced was used to wrap Cuba's finest cigars. The Corojo Ashtray that borrows the name is our flagship cigar piece: round, deep, and beautifully weighted, with a single built-in rest. It makes a striking statement on any desk, patio, or bar top.

Habano Cast Iron Cigar Ashtray

The Habano carries the same build in a different profile, and it is the one with two built-in rests rather than one — the ashtray to reach for when someone is smoking with you. Equally at home as a gift for the cigar lover in your life.

Perfecto Cast Iron Cigar Ashtray

The Perfecto rounds out our ashtray trio. Its form is oval rather than round, with a built-in rest that takes most cigar sizes and the same deep basin as the other two. A perfect gift for Father's Day, birthdays, or any occasion.

Farmhouse Pulleys & Decorative Hardware

Halat Farmhouse Wall Mount Pulley

Our Halat Farmhouse Pulley is one of our most distinctive pieces — a cast iron wall-mount pulley that evokes old barn machinery and industrial-era hardware. It can be used functionally for rope lighting, plant hangers, or decorative drapery, or purely as a sculptural wall accent. Either way, it's a conversation piece. To build a light with one, follow how to create cozy DIY lighting fixtures with cast iron.

Best for: farmhouse living rooms, barn conversions, industrial-style kitchens, outdoor porches.

How to Choose the Right Cast Iron Piece for Your Space

The same hook reads differently in a kitchen.

Not sure where to start? Here's a simple room-by-room guide:

Entryway & Mudroom

This is where a wall of hooks earns its keep — winter coats, backpacks, wet umbrellas, the school bag that lands on the floor otherwise. Go for our Astor, Vagon, or Sabo hooks in sets of 10 for full wall coverage. Add a pair of Slack Railroad Spike hooks for a focal-point hook rail.

Bathroom

For a cohesive look, build around the Motris collection: Motris Towel Ring + Motris Toilet Paper Holder + Motris Single or Dual Head Hook. It's a complete cast iron bathroom set that looks intentional, not piecemeal.

Kitchen

Under-cabinet hooks for mugs and utensils: go with the Spur Hook Set of 6. For hanging pots on a rail or wall: Vagon or Sabo hooks.

Home Office or Study

A cast iron cigar ashtray (Corojo, Habano, or Perfecto) on the desk. The Halat Pulley as a wall accent. The Sirkeci Hook by the door for your bag and jacket.

Garage or Workshop

Sets of ten: Vagon Hook Set of 10 or Sabo Hook Set of 10. Ten identical solid cast iron hooks is what a tool wall actually needs — buying them one at a time is how the project stalls. Both sets include mounting hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Rustic State products actually cast iron?

Yes — every piece in our collection is crafted from genuine cast iron, not zinc alloy, die-cast metal, or resin with a metallic paint finish. You'll feel the difference in the weight the moment you hold one. For the checks that get past the paint, from a magnet to the marks a casting carries, see how to tell real cast iron from painted zinc or resin.

Will cast iron hooks rust in a bathroom?

Our hooks are solid cast iron, hand-finished, with good moisture resistance. Cast iron can still rust if it is left exposed to moisture for long periods, so what prevents it in a bathroom is keeping the piece dry.

How much weight can Rustic State hooks hold?

Our hooks are solid cast iron, and we don't publish a weight rating for them, or for our towel rings and towel bars. The only piece with a published figure is the wall-mount pulley: up to 15 lbs when properly mounted into a stud.

What comes with the hook?

Mounting hardware is included with most of our hooks, towel rings and wall-mounted holders. There are two exceptions: a screw-in hook that threads directly into wood, and a free-standing holder that needs no drilling.

What's the best cast iron hook for a farmhouse bathroom?

The Fred Wall Mount Railroad Spike and the Motris Dual Headed Hook are our top picks for farmhouse bathroom styling. Pair either with our Motris Towel Ring and Toilet Paper Holder for a fully coordinated look.

Do you ship free?

Yes — Rustic State offers free shipping on all orders over $29.
